Yotsuba-Choco

Overview

Yotsuba Choco – a 19-year-old independent artist from China. Her primary musical styles include J-Pop, rock, and jazz, though her work spans a wide range of genres.

She single-handedly handles lyrics, composition, arrangement, performance, vocals, mixing, and mastering, while also creating her own artwork and directing its visual presentation. As a literary artist, she has independently written the novel Natural Era Faction, separate from her music career. Guided by Taoist philosophy and way of life, she is a multi-talented artist.

On July 16, 2025, she officially released the EP Radiance Sea, which includes the lead track of her Chronicle Album Lonely Island Artist (2025), marking the true beginning of her music career centered around the Chronicle Album project.

"Negative emotions are just fuel for my songs. Life is the best!"

Her work explores deep themes of society and existence, creating unforgettable music that cuts across multiple styles and emotions.

Her three representative Chronicle Albums — Lonely Island Artist (2025), Soul-Prime (2026), and Abyss of Sleeping Bronze Illness (2027) — each unfold different narratives centered around [Ego], [Id], and [Superego]. Drawing strength from Chinese Taoist philosophy, these works aim to break down the shackles, struggles, conflicts, psychological issues, confusion, chaos, and various limitations that people face in the 21st century. They guide listeners toward a "non-central" nature, helping them understand their own meaning in this world.

From the opening track Crabapple to Hashin, the concepts are consistently infused with a strong emotional impact known as The Yotsuba Style — a sign that her image is being carved into "a black vinyl record shaped like the Himalayas."

Moving between tradition and modernity, reality and fantasy, with the Asia-Pacific cultural sphere as her stage, she embraces both the darkness and the love of humanity. With her highly distinctive voice and musical style, she is gradually permeating and influencing the Reiwa era music scene.

Turning with the tide, always drifting.

Debut Roots

Yotsuba Choco was born on October 19, 2008, in a remote town in China's Hunan province.

In 2021, she began creating Minecraft content online under the name "Fish_Lucky." The viewership never took off.

On September 30, 2022, she launched an online studio called "White tide TeAm Studio," bringing together over a dozen creators. But the momentum didn't last. In early 2023, White tide TeAm officially disbanded. Growing weary of stagnation and the feeling of achieving nothing, she set out on a path of independent creation.

In October 2023, she was diagnosed with severe depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder, and took leave from school to study at home. Her mental health continued to decline, eventually progressing into bipolar disorder and mild paranoid personality traits—conditions that would cast a long shadow over her creative journey.

On July 27, 2024, she crossed paths with music for the first time. Under the name Yotsuba Choco, she released her debut instrumental single, Fuunama.

On July 16, 2025, she independently released her first J-POP EP, Radiance Sea—handling every aspect herself: lyrics, composition, arrangement, performance, vocals, mixing, and mastering. That day marked her official debut as an artist, and the beginning of her "Annual Album" project.

On February 1, 2026, her first conceptual Annual Album, Lonely Island Artist (2025), was released worldwide. Featuring 30 high-quality tracks created throughout 2025, the album's artwork was also illustrated by the artist herself. Blending Chinese Taoist philosophy with Heidegger's existentialism, the album presents a richly narrative "Ego"—offering young listeners a sense of direction in life. Representative tracks include Diorama Families, Solitary Specter, and Low Shred.

On June 19, 2026, Choco began writing and serializing her full-length postmodern classical novel, Natural Era Faction. The story begins with her traveling back in time to the Ming Dynasty and becoming a clan leader, unfolding a magnificent martial arts epic set against the backdrop of the Jiajing era. Written in a meta-narrative style with the artist herself as the protagonist, the novel employs a "zero-degree writing" approach that faithfully reflects her real-life personality and reactions. Beneath its literary craftsmanship lies a quiet revelation of her profound thoughts and everyday habits. That day also marked her formal entry into the world of literature.

On June 27, 2026, she announced her return as a content creator on Bilibili, sharing playful videos about music, daily life, and gaming. Fans welcomed her comeback with warmth, affectionately calling her "Sister Ye."

On October 19, 2026—the day of her 18th birthday, marking her coming of age—her Annual Album for the year, Soul-Prime (2026), is set for release. A meditation on the existence of life, primal desires, biological instincts, and the journey of love, the album urges listeners to confront the ugliness within, embrace their own shame and impurity, while offering both a satire of animalistic impulses and a dirge for the sorrow of being alive.

Origin of the Artist Name

"Yotsuba Choco"—the "Choco" part is a variation of the name "Cocoa" (Hoto Kokoa), the protagonist of the anime Is the Order a Rabbit? At the time she came up with the name, she was following two Japanese anime series: Is the Order a Rabbit? and Teasing Master Takagi-san. Her love for hot chocolate and iced cocoa naturally led her to adopt the name "Choco."

"Yotsuba"—meaning four-leaf clover—symbolizes good fortune in life. Beyond that, she finds joy in the wide range of interpretations the four leaves can hold—each one, for instance, could represent aspects of her bipolarity or her androgynous nature. That kind of open-ended meaning makes her happy.

Ultimately, she chose this name simply because she found the visual balance of "Yotsuba Choco" to be exquisitely pleasing to the eye.

Representative Albums

Lonely Island Artist (2025), Soul-Prime (2026), and Abyss of Sleeping Bronze Illness (2027)—these three works stand as the pillars of Yotsuba Choco's Annual Album series.

Lifestyle

Yotsuba Choco is a realist, a romantic, and a pacifist. She neither drinks nor smokes.

She loves coffee—especially cappuccino, butter milk latte, and coconut milk latte—and never says no to cookies. Jasmine milk tea and mango sago drinks are also regulars in her daily rotation.

She has a soft spot for sweets with "half-sugar"—just the right amount of sweetness—and is particularly fond of pork floss bread and melon pan.

When she's deep in arranging music, even as drowsiness makes her body tremble, she often continues working in a half-asleep daze. And oddly enough, it's in those states that she sometimes finishes tracks that even surprise herself.
